We are the British Apple Consortium, a registered charity dedicated to educating the public of the apple diversity that Britain offers and stopping the decline of British apple growers and orchards within the UK.

Our Mission

British Apple Consortium was founded to be a platform in which we can inform the public of the need for British apple varieties and support for UK based apple growers.

The apple industry is in the middle of a crisis. Cheap imports dominate the British apple market, resulting in a steady decline in growers and orchards. A campaigner from the environmental group Sustain stated that "the UK produces delicious quality apples, but we desperately need to support our horticulture industry. "

Britain's convenience stores and supermarkets sell 80% of the country's apples. Only 38% of the apples sold in Tesco and Asda were British, while convenience stores scored lower, with 27%.

Britain now imports more than 70% of its apples; some brought from as far away as Chile and China. Apple production overseas has prioritised bulk over quality, and supermarket-led economies have encouraged the British apple industry to follow suit. More than 2,000 apple varieties exist in Britain, but only 30 are grown commercially.

We need your help to make a change.
